The Great Barrier Reef is an integral part of our culture, heritage, identity and wellbeing. It has been instrumental in our survival and resilience as coastal Traditional Custodians. Our land and sea has many stories to tell including how we must live, use, conserve and manage this special coastal landscape for the present and future. Today, our Great Barrier Reef faces many challenges. It is not only under threat by natural events, but also by multiple and accumulative impacts. This poses the question – is the Great Barrier Reef resilient enough to withstand these impacts in the long term? This is what our Great Barrier Reef community has been debating for some time. As one of the Great Barrier Reef’s Traditional custodians, we are concerned about the future of our reef country. We, the Yirrganydji, have been active in doing our part in reef conservation, management and stewardship with the goal to enhance the resilience and both natural and cultural integrity of our Great Barrier Reef. Our presentation will provide a Yirrganydji First Nations perspective on reef resilience, management and stewardship, some of the challenges that we face, and potential solutions to enable effective and efficient action on the Great Barrier Reef.
